First of all what is a cheat meal or cheat day?
The 'cheat' is referred to cheating on your diet. Purposefully having a surplus of calories in one meal or a full day.
These feastings have been shown to increase your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) in response being in a calorie defecit. (eating less calories than you burn) which can cause your metabolic rate to slow down.
So in short, yes they can be helpful as part of a weight loss plan.
Do I recommend cheat meals to my clients? No, I don't tell them to gorge all day. What i've found is that we tend to have social events every 1-3 weeks. So what I tell my clients is to have fun relax of the eating plan but not to excess. But most important, enjoy themselves.
A few tips when considering adding cheat meals to your diet are:
1) Be purposeful not reactive. It better to plan to eat some cake at a friends wedding then it is to drive past a fast food and grab something totally unhealthy. Have something you really enjoy.
2) Don't go over the top. Eat until your satisfied not sick.
3) Remember that different body types will have different responses. If you more prone to adding fat, take it a little easier on them and have them less frequently.
